Chapter Seven

Mr. Time kidnapped the light hours of the following day.

But guess what? It’s not like it had been a spectacular, super-duper, sickeningly sweet Thursday. My ass was firmly and achily fixed on the couch for the majority of it while answering messages and calls from every single family member imaginable, regarding my birthday plans—all the while, failing at what happened last night.

And not a word from Jonathan.

No time went to wondering about the uniformed man since Lovells scattered across the island wanted to know where I wanted our rambunctious group to meet, what they should bring, and was it wrong to come with a cousins’ ex-boyfriend? I wasn’t making a big deal of the festivities. Although, anybody in the family’s b-day always included everybody, no matter what age the person was turning—the day is special. Period. My big family didn’t miss a single second of any one of us.

A reunion-slash-birthday was what they were and being surrounded by those loving crazies was a thousand times better than where it took place, or what gifts I received, or whether or not Beyoncé would finally show up.

One of these days... she couldn’t ignore the zillion invites sent every year.

Playing it simple, I wanted the shindig to take place in the accommodating party room of The Growling Grill. There, we’d eat, crack jokes, yada, yada, then at six that evening, as was tradition, we’d move the party to the field by Gemini Rock. Ma would prepare duffel bags of extra clothing stashed in her minivan. Such provided for after running in wolf-form through the tall grass and woods that lined the field. It was balls to the metaphorical wall, all out horseplay. That was what I looked forward to. Devin, the evil older brother, was kind of impaired in his wolf state, and you best believe I’d have his ass howling “Mercy!”

Of course, more feasting takes place. Pops and the uncles usually set up rotisseries over fires where big ol’ hogs hung with mighty delicious golden and slightly charred skin.

Piper, Gods bless her, also took calls from my folks since they knew I’d be busy with others. She relayed what I had in mind and to show at the restaurant around noon on Saturday.

Surprisingly, nothing came up about Carver.

Finally, the calls ceased. The last was the most grueling. It was thirty-five long minutes with my sister Tammy’s four-year-old daughter, Luna. I heard her insistence of being on the phone with me in the background, so I caved. Error on my part! Baby girl went on and on about the importance of her wearing a tutu during my birthday. She adorably assured it would still be my special day even though she’ll be looking like a magical princess.

I loved my niece to pieces, and each time I saw her cute, chubby face, my uterus asked, “Can we have one?” But Luna’s mouth was like an uncontrollable freight train without a conductor.

Which then had my uterus saying, “Nah, we’re good riding solo for now.”

After
